This time of year is particularly special all around the world, a time of giving and receiving love as well as gifts. However, for many children in India it is a time when they are busy manufacturing gifts for others, working in conditions of slavery.

115 million child labourers are involved in hazardous work, while 61 million children are shut out of primary school. Education Envoy is calling on the Indian Parliament to pass the Child and Adolescent Labour Abolition Bill to abolish child labour under 14 years of age and ensure all children can go to school.

UN Global Education Envoy Gordon Brown is leading the charge to get every child learning at school around the globe. He has been tasked by Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, to deliver on the world’s promise to ensure that every child receives the right to go to school and learn by 2015.

No child should miss out on their birthright to education because of where they live, their gender, disability, background or family’s income. Please sign the petition and head over to Education Envoy to find out more. Let’s make this particular holiday story have a happy ending

What at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, CT was unspeakable and horrible. Like other parents, families and friends of children, we are all grieving the senseless deaths of 20 children aged five to 10 and seven adults including the gunman.

While we are mourning and piecing together what happened today, we know one thing: gun violence took the lives of innocent victims. This year alone, the US saw mass shootings in a Colorado movie theatre (July 20th), a Sikh temple in Wisconsin (August 5th), a Minneapolis business (September 27th), in an Oregon mall (December 11th), and today in an elementary school in Connecticut.

Gun-related deaths are lower in US states with stricter gun control laws and yet deadly firearms such as assault weapons are too easily and legally obtained.

Now is the time to address gun control legislation, gun violence, and mental health -- before we have more blood on our hands.

Our thoughts go to every family who lost a loved one today.

Stainless Steel for Kitchen Friday 18 May 2012

Stainless Steel is a common name for metal alloys that consist of Nickel, Chromium and Iron. These elements inhibit corrosion from occurring to the metal, and make stainless steel a useful material for commercial uses. Although it is called "stainless", a better term for it is "highly stain resistant". A somewhat dark metal, it looks bright because it reflects light. These different alloys allow fabrication and use possibilities among the different grades. This allows the 300 series is the most widely available and used of all stainless steel grades. There are few types of 300 series that can be found, which are 303, 304, 308, 310 and 316. The series contains different types of stainless steel; however, all types of stainless steel in the series contain about the same amount of nickel, iron and chromium. However, the most popular series that has been in kitchen industry are 304 and 316.

Type 304 stainless steel is one of the most widely used and oldest of the stainless steels. This was originally called 18-8 which stood for its chromium and nickel content. It possesses an excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance and fabricability. These stainless steels are used in the food and beverage industry, such as Silos, cheese vats, fruit tanks and wine tanks.

Type 316 is an austenitic stainless steel that has an increased molybdenum content to increase its resistance to corrosion when compared to other 300 series alloys. It will resist scaling at temperatures up to 1600 F. This material is used for heat treating applications where hot salt solution is used, and also used in the marine industry because of its resistance to corrosion. And at the same time, it is also used in food and beverage processing and chemical processing applications.

What are the main benefits of stainless steel in kitchen utensils?
  • It is one of the most hygienic surfaces for the preparation of foods and very easy to clean, as its unique surface has no pores or cracks to harbour dirt, grime or bacteria.
  • It is very attractive and requires minimal care, since it won't chip or easily rust and it takes little seasoning.
  • It will not affect flavour, as it does not react with acidic foods during food preparation or cooking.
  • With proper care, it has a useful life expectancy of over 100 years, and it is totally recyclable.

Quartz Stone Thursday 10 May 2012

Quartz is one of the most common mineral on earth. It is attractive and durable. It can be cut and carved in many forms and sizes. And Quartz is a material used in the manufacturing of countertops. Quartz countertops are made of natural quartz combined with polyester resins and pigment. These components create strong, durable and hygienic countertops. Since it is not 100% stone, therefore, it typically referred to as engineered quartz.

Quartz countertop surface do not need to be sealed in order to keep them from staining. It is indestructible and maintenance free and easy to clean by using warm, soapy water. It is not easily scratched by metal utensils, heat resistance and non-radioactive. It is also does not harbour bacteria, non-porous, which make the food preparation in kitchen is safe. It is also would not easy get discoloration in between sections and the colour always consistent throughout. However, Quartz countertops can be expensive. The price might reach half of the total kitchen budget. And it is not easy task to install and requires special considerations.

It is easy to maintain and care for Quartz Countertops. Any stains commonly can be clean by using multipurpose cleaner or household detergent and wipe with ordinary water immediately. In order to prevent damage to the top from heat, it is recommended to use pads when putting hot objects and do not expose surface to flames. And one must remember that the top is easily damage if get expose to strong chemicals and solvents.

Besides the cleanliness, durability and lack of maintenance, there's one more good reason to go with a Quartz Countertop -- it's green. Radon is a colorless and odorless gas found in different levels all over the Earth. Many manufactured household materials, like granite countertops, emit small levels of radon. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that indoor pollution can be up to 100 times higher than outdoor pollution.
